Kotor is a historic coastal town in southwestern Montenegro, located along the stunning Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska). Known for its medieval architecture, dramatic mountain backdrop, and rich maritime history, Kotor is one of the best-preserved old towns in the Adriatic region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kotor sits at the end of the Bay of Kotor, a winding, fjord-like bay surrounded by steep limestone mountains. Although often called Europe’s southernmost fjord, it is actually a submerged river canyon. The landscape creates one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Mediterranean.
Kotor’s Old Town is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, charming squares, and historic stone buildings dating back to the 12th–14th centuries. Key landmarks include:
  • St. Tryphon’s Cathedral (1166) – One of Montenegro’s most important Romanesque churches.
  • Kotor Fortress (San Giovanni Fortress) – A hike of over 1,300 steps rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the bay.
